John Redman Marshall was born on 10 Jan 1837 at Skipton, Talbar, Maryland. He died 18 April 1927 in Yorkville, Kendall, Illinois. He grew up in Chicago attending Chicago Public Schools until 15 years of age when he apprenticed in the newsroom of the Chicago Journal. He worked as a journeyman printer until the outbreak of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Sturgess Rifles at Chicago in 1861 and fought in many of the important battles in the Eastern Theatre before he was mustered out in 1863. By that time, his parents, Perry and Mary (Rice) Marshall had retired to Kendall County. When Marshall visited them he learned of the need for a newspaper in what was to become the new county seat at Yorkville. Accordingly, he established the Kendall County Record, publishing the first issue May 1, 1864. He married Ann Agusta Emmons on 19 January 1865 at Yorkville, Illinois. He retired as editor and publisher of the Record May 1, 1914. He also served as the Kendall County School Superintendent, Yorkville Postmaster, and in the Illinois State Senate.
